Guardian ad Litem (GAL)

A Guardian ad Litem, often referred to as a “GAL,” is a trained professional appointed by the court to represent, usually, the best interests of a child. A GAL functions as the eyes and ears of the court, investigates and interviews witnesses, and reports findings and makes recommendations to the court concerning parenting rights and responsibilities.

Online social media issues abound in my GAL practice.

To post private and embarrassing items before litigation is bad enough, in that these postings never go away. But, it’s truly amazing what parties in the middle of parenting battle still post! If there is a contention that a parent has a drug or alcohol problem, it’s probably not the right time to post photos doing jello shots during Happy Hour or posing next to bong.

I have been certified as a Guardian ad Litem in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts, although I no longer serve in Massachusetts. Should someone be involved in a case which needs a skillful investigation and thoughtful recommendations, she or he could ask the court that I be appointed.
