About Me

After graduating from Boston Latin School, I attended Boston College. There, I majored in English and Comparative Religion. I then attended Suffolk Law School where I received the degree of Juris Doctor Cum Laude.

I began practicing law in downtown Boston, following a family tradition. I also accepted a teaching position in Suffolk Law School, where I became an Executive Director of Legal Assistance, lecturing in Family Law Practice and Trial Tactics. I taught a clinical course for 3rd year law students, running a legal assistance bureau in Charlestown, representing battered women from the inner city,

I am admitted to practice law in MA, NH, VT and the Federal Bar and have tried more than 1,000 cases. In my civil practice, I have been fortunate to obtain many large verdicts and settlements for my clients in everything from exploding propane tanks and wrongful death actions to multi-vehicle collisions and slip and falls. In my divorce practice, I have fought for my clients’ rights all the way to the State Supreme Court. My criminal success record ranges from obtaining acquittals for my clients in murder and rape trials through winning dismissals of drug trafficking and DWI charges. I have obtained for my clients the then New Hampshire record award for psychic injury. I was a member of the CJA Panel for the US District Court, District of NH, qualified to represent criminal defendants in general and complex crimes.

Law Practice

• I am a Certified Guardian ad Litem in MA and NH and the President of the NH Guardian ad Litem Association.
• I am a Certified Family Mediator, Founding Member-Advanced Mediator, of the Academy Of Professional Family Mediators.
• I have published and lectured in the areas of law, mediation, comparative religion, and the martial arts and teach online for University of Phoenix.

When not practicing law, I teach martial arts. I am the Founder and Chief Instructor of Black Sword Aikido. My approach and philosophy in mediating is heavily influenced by my aikido training. I have been practicing aikido for 41 years, and I hold a Godan, 5th Degree, black belt from Aikikai Hombu, as well as black belts and instructor ranks in other martial arts. I use aikido principles to diffuse resistance and anger, and facilitate resolution.

I am also a stage and close up magician and a member of the Inner Circle of Bizarre Magick, the British Society of Mystery Entertainers, the Order of Merlin with Shield of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the Chair of the Insurance Committee of the Society of American Magicians and the President of Nashua Assembly 118. I perform as a mystery performer.

In summary, I am a Trial Attorney, Mediator, Guardian ad Litem, and Collaborative Law Practitioner, with over 30 years of experience in trying cases. Therefore, I can share my experience of what a Court is likely to do and what it would cost a party in attorney fees and other costs to litigate, rather than mediate a case.

Personal Interest: Martial Arts

When not engaged in the practice of law, I teach martial arts.

I am the Founder and Chief Instructor of Black Sword Aikido, a martial art which combines Japanese and Chinese fighting arts with meditation, breathing exercises and the study of philosophy and oriental medicine.

I regularly teach classes in my martial art studio located in Lyndeborough NH.

Personal Interest: Magic

I am a member of the Society of American Magicians, President of the Granite State Magicians, Nashua, New Hampshire, and a member of the Inner Circle of Bizarre Magick, and the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Order of Merlin, Excelsius.

I perform with my wife, Kathy Caulfield, as Lord & Lady BlackSword. Please check out our Facebook page for pictures, videos, and upcoming events. The type of magic we perform is referred to as Bizarre Magic, Theatrical Magic, or Mystery Performing. Whatever it’s called, we perform magic in a manner that produces a moment of transcendence for the audience, leaving them with something much more than “How’d they do it? Oh yeah, mirrors.”
